In order to connect more with my followers and be more a more authentic blogger, I really want you all to get to know me as Blair and not as someone who just posts pretty photos on IG. To get the ball rolling, every month I’ll be posting 5 songs that I’m obsessed with and share why I resonate with it and the lyrics. These selections are, like my taste in music, all over the place as I’ve never stuck to just one genre of music.

Listening to music has pulled me out of various dark spots and seeing as today (October 10) is World Mental Health Day, I thought there’s no better day than today to start this monthly feature. I hope you enjoy and maybe discover a song that can help you or just get you dancing!

Say You Won’t Let Go – James Arthur

This is exactly the type of song I love — soothing with beautiful and well written lyrics that tell a story and is accompanied by soft guitar melodies. The song isn’t trying too hard, James isn’t pushing his voice – he’s taking his time and you can feel that he means what he’s singing about. The song describes the most simplest acts of endearment like kissing someone on the head and pulling someone into your chest and those small things often mean the most.

New Man – Ed Sheeran

This is a good one! It’s punchy with a fun beat but the lyrics that are so brilliantly written. Honestly in my opinion the song shouldn’t work because it’s quite wordy but the lyrics are just too good and clever. The message behind the song is so clear and it’s that about a girl being with a guy who sounds like an asshole but still talks to the nice guy she’s still into. Ed describes it as an “anthem against fuck-boys” and I couldn’t agree more. It’s almost a song that turns into an ultimatum – either stay with him and leave me alone or make the choice and leave him and be with me.

Top Of The World – Carpenters

This is my all-time favourite song in the whole world. I don’t know what it is but it just makes me so happy. The fun kind of country vibe with the slide guitar and melody just gets me bobbing my head every time I listen to it. The song’s message is just about being happy and feeling so in love that you don’t need anything else, just that one person and you’re golden! Any time I’m having a hard day or I need a pick-me-up, I put this on and for 2 minutes and 58 seconds, the whole world and all the problems that come with it are forgotten.

You Learn – Alanis Morissette

This song is the original tough chick anthem and that’s why I love it! No matter what experience you go through be it positive or negative, you learn from it and it’s so true in this song. The lyrics are so powerful and uplifting that it instantly changes my mood after I blast it and sing along. I honestly don’t think there’s a better song to listen to after a shitty day!

I Need The Sun To Break – James Bay

This is the song that sold me on James Bay. This song is all about hope and change and finally “waking up” and realizing what you want. He’s basically praying that he hasn’t missed his chance and I think that’s so beautiful. It’s so hard to ask for what you want and it’s even more difficult when you feel like you’ve let it pass you by. The vocal harmonies and minimal instrumentation lets the lyrics take centre stage which results in a powerful and moving song.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Great post, B! My entire childhood was basically spent screaming/singing every Alanis song at the top of lungs.
